LDK PARTY LEADER INSISTS ON INDEPENDENCE FROM SERBIA |
This article lists political personalities in Kosovo. Kosovo is a democratic republic, where the President is the head of state, and the head of government is the Prime Minister. The executive and legislative powers are divided between the government and the parliament. The latter exercises the legislative power; whereas, the government exercises the executive power. Both powers are responsible for the Judiciary. As the effect of the parliamentary elections of 6th of October is upon the people, a presentation on the most important personalities in the political arena in Kosovo would be useful in offering information to the citizens of the country. As such, this project contains personalities that have played a key role in Kosovo's history, especially on the long path of Kosovo becoming independent, personalities that have contributed on the recognition of Kosovo as a state; and personalities that are still working for Kosovo' betterment. Most of the sources used in this page were originally in the Albanian language, which later were translated in English. All of the information provided below comes from different, credible and reliable sources. |

Ibrahim Rugova - was born on 12/02/1994, in the municipality of Istog, specifically, Cerrce village. On January 10, 1945 the Yugoslav communists shot his father Ukë and grandfather Rrustë Rugova, who had been famous fighter against Chetnik bands who were penetrating into Kosovo during World War II. Ibrahim Rugova finished elementary school in Istog and secondary school in Peja in 1967. He graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy - Department of Albanian Language and Literature in Prishtina. During the academic year 1976-77 he stayed in Paris, at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes, under the supervision of prof. Roland Barthes, where he attended his scholarly interests in the study of literature with a focus on literary theory. He defended his doctorate dissertation in the field of literature at the University of Prishtina, in 1984. In 1996 Dr. Ibrahim Rugova was elected correspondent of the Academy of Arts and Sciences of Kosovo. At the beginning he was editor of the student newspaper “Bota e Re” (New World) and of the scientific journal “Dituria” (Knowledge) (1971-72), which were published in Prishtina. A while he worked for the newsletter “Fjala” (The Word). Then, for nearly two decades, Dr. Ibrahim Rugova conducted his own scientific activities at the Institute of Albanology as literature researcher. For a time he was chief editor of the magazine “Gjurmime Albanalogjike” (Albanological Tracking) of this Institute. With literary creativity he was engaged from the early sixties.(Govt, par.1)
Dr. Ibrahim Rugova, in 1988, was elected chairman of the Kosovo Writers' Association, which became a powerful core of the Albanian movement, which challenged the Serbian and Yugoslav communist rule in Kosovo. As a famous intellectual who gave voice to this intellectual and political movement Dr. Ibrahim Rugova was elected on December 23, 1989, from the founding, president of the Democratic League of Kosovo, the first political party in Kosovo which directly challenged the ruling Communist regime. DLK, under the leadership of Dr. Ibrahim Rugova, quickly became the leading political force in Kosova, gathering most of the people around him. In cooperation with other Albanian political forces in Kosovo as well as with the Assembly of Kosovo of that time, Dr. Ibrahim Rugova and the DLK concluded the legal framework for the institutionalization of the independence of Kosovo. The Declaration of Independence (2 July 1990), declaration of the Republic of Kosovo and approval of its constitution (7 September 1990), the national referendum for the independence and sovereignty of Kosovo, held in late September 1991, was the prelude for the first multiparty elections for the Assembly of Kosovo, held on May 24, 1992. Dr. Ibrahim Rugova was elected President of the Republic of Kosovo. He was then reelected President of the Republic of Kosovo in the elections held in March 1998. (Govt. par 2)

ELECTIONS
In the first local elections held on October 2000, DLK won the majority of votes under the leadership of Dr. Ibrahim Rugova, and the second local elections in 2002. He was elected the first President of Kosovo in March 2002 and reelected in 2004. Ibrahim Rugova is one of the most influential people that had a huge impact on the foundation of the Republic of Kosovo. His contributions are well recognized by his nation and international actors.
CONTROVERSY
As a politician Dr. Ibrahim Rugova had his fair share of controversy. Many Kosovar Albanians hail him as one of the biggest moral leader, whereas others feel like he prolonged his program of passive resistance. His actions allowed Serbia to have an upper hand and left Kosovo defenseless.
AWARDS & HONORS
Despite his Controversy, Dr. Ibrahim Rugova highly influenced Kosovo before and after the war. He was awarded and honored with many honors such as:
- In 1995, the peace award of the Paul Litzer Foundation in Denmark was granted to Dr.Ibrahim Rugova.
- In 1996, Ibrahim Rugova was conferred the Honoris Causa degree by the University of Paris VIII – Sorbonne, France.
- In 1998, Rugova was awarded the Sakharov Prize by the European Parliament for his peaceful policies.
- In the year 1999, Rugova was granted the peace award of the city of Münster, Germany, and proclaimed honorary citizen of Venice, Milan, and Brecscia, Italy, respectively.
- In the year 2000, Dr. Rugova was granted the Peace Prize of the Democratic Union of Catalonia “Manuel Carrasco i Formiguera”, in Barcelona, Spain” (Trepca, par.5).

Dr. Ibrahim Rugova passed away, while serving in office, on 21 January 2006 in Prishtina. He was buried in Sunny. On January 21, 2007, one year after his death, President Dr. Fatmir Sejdiu, honored Dr. Ibrahim Rugova with the Order “Hero of Kosovo”. This award is given to historical figures of Albania who have highly contributed on the Albanian culture and have shown “acts of courage”.

Memli Krasniqi
Memli Krasniqi~ holds a position as a Minister in the Ministry of Agriculture. He was born and raised in Prishtina. He attended primary school in Pristina, and then proceeded with high school in "Xhevdet Doda". He finished his university with a major in Political Science and Public Administration at the University of Prishtina. Since chosen one of the best students, he received a Master degree in the field of IR from the London ECS( Economics and Political Science)
That is when he began his job as a journalist in the American news company. Later on, in 2013, he joined PDK and is still a member of the party.
Besides this, he had other talents that he relieved during his adultery. He was a musician for years and also created many projects with famous Kosovan singers. His music taste resulted more in Hip-hop, and that is why he became a member of the group Ritmi I Rruges.

Presidents of the Assembly of Kosovo
Kadri Veseli ~ (born 31 May 1966) is a Kosovar politician and the incumbent Chairman of the Assembly. He is the leader of the Democratic Party of Kosovo, the largest party of the Government of Kosovo. Veseli was one of the founders and leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army. He also was the chief of the Kosovo Intelligence Service, a post-war state intelligence organisation. Veseli began his higher education studies in 1990 at the University of Prishtina Faculty of Agriculture and the Higher Pedagogical School in Albanian Language and Literature Department. Due to political circumstances, he was forced to complete the remainder of his studies in Albania. He has a bachelor's degree from the University of Kamëz, Albania, an MBA in General Management from the Sheffield University – International Faculty in Thessaloniki, Greece, and currently is preparing the PhD Thesis in the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia. Veseli speaks English, German, and Serbian languages. With his wife, Violeta, he is the parents to four children.In May 2016, Veseli became President of PDK by acclamation. He was elected with no votes against and no abstentions. Kadri Veseli is a candidate for Prime Minister of Kosovo in the upcoming October elections. ( Revolvy, 2019)
Mr.Veseli was chosen President of the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo for the second time in succession on September 7, 2017, and Chairman of the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK), in May 2016. Before his political race as PDK Vice President, in January 2013, Mr.Veseli for about 10 years, as a team with the global network, added to the field of security, harmony building and dependability in post-war Kosovo. He was additionally one of the main figures of the Kosovo Liberation Army, and simultaneously, has effectively bolstered the harmony procedure in Rambouillet.

Visar Arifaj ~ (born June 4, 1987 in Prishtina) is a self-declared billionaire and the leader of the satirist Strong Party of Kosovo. His official title is Kryetar Lexhendar (Legendary Chairman).There is a book written on his behalf and an ethnic song dedicated to his deeds. Visar Airfaj is a painter, politician, legendary mayor of the Strong Party who ran in the 2013 local elections for mayor of Pristina and later in the 2014 general elections. In Kosovo with his party known for satire ideology a comedy and literature genre depicting the dire situation with ironic humor, Visar is a designer by profession where he studied at the Faculty of Arts at the University of Prishtina and since December 2013 has held the position of municipal councilor in the Municipality of Prishtina after winning 1,334 (1.56%) of the vote in the 2013 local elections and is a self-proclaimed billionaire once the wealth he has has stated a figure of 1.7 billion euros he has stated that his first painting he made while in elementary school is worth 1 billion euros as well. Arifaj is known for many funny and ironic quotes that show the reality in Kosovo.
The Strong Party (Albanian: Partia e Fortë, PF) is a satirical political party in Kosovo formed in 2013. Its goal is "to come to power to control public money in the interest of supporters and the like-minded."
As part of the group's commitment to gender equality, over thirty percent of the candidates running for office in the upcoming election are men. The Party seeks to maintain the political status quo, praising Kosovo as a democratic country where living people as well as "those in the other world" can vote. Party leaders claim a victory of around 120 percent, as measured by the group's pollsters.
The Party is headed by Visar Arifaj-whose official title Kryetar Lexhendar (Legendary Chairman) is intentionally misspelled with the so-called hard xh-and other young activists from Prishtina. It is the only political party which has no ordinary members, beside the Legendary Chairman all its supporters serve as deputy chairmen. The Strong Party is a grass roots organization linked to the coffee culture of Kosovo's capital.
