For details on Slack at RIT, review the Slack Wiki Home.

Slack is here!

RIT has signed a contract with Slack for an enterprise license, and we’re excited to announce that interested faculty can start signing up for it today! (We owe many thanks to ITS and ILI for their extraordinary work in expediting this deployment.)

If you’re not familiar with Slack, it’s a communication and collaboration tool that allows for messaging, file sharing, and collaboration within a group. You can read a bit about it here:

If you’ve used the free version of Slack in the past, you’ll find that the Enterprise Grid version has a number of features that aren’t available in the free version that many of you have used:

If you’re interested in using Slack with your classes this fall, there are several options available to you:

  1. If you are already familiar with managing Slack or Discord workspaces, and feel comfortable configuring your own workspace, including adding users and setting permissions, you can request dedicated workspaces for any of your classes now. Please review the information about Requesting a Slack Workspace and Setting Up Your Workspace carefully; there are many things you’ll need to change from their default settings.
  2. If you’re familiar with Slack, but aren’t quite ready to start your own class workspace, you can join the rit-sample-class.slack.com workspace and take a look around. There will be a number of faculty available there to answer questions, and you’ll be able to explore the enterprise environment at your own pace. Review information about joining a Sample Class Slack workspace.
  3. If you’re brand-new to Slack, and want to know more about how you might use it in your classes, you can start by reviewing the Slack wiki documentation.

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to your CATs rep via: cats@rit.edu.
