 Discussion of ProcessJim and all
  • Mission and Vision: still draft statements, send any feedback to the steering committee via their discussion boards
    • Some discussion of the phrase "global knowledge economy" - we would appreciate some clarification on what this means exactly
  • Dimensions of the Strategic Plan:
    • Some strategies may/should cut across dimensions
    • Alumni and faculty are not themselves a dimension, but should show up in all dimensions
    • The Environmental Scan can be a resource in terms of understanding what higher ed in general is doing in each dimension and what future changes to the field should be understood when creating our plan
  • Schedule: it is tight, important deadlines are 4/28 for the goals and strategies and 5/12 for our final report
  • Deliverables: goals and strategies, plus an explanatory narrative (but not a formal report)
    • Spirited discussion on costs + "funding source" and why we should concern ourselves with these instead of focusing on what can/should be strategized. We agreed to worry about those columns only after we decided what makes sense from a strategy point of view.
 Current initial goalsJim and all
  • Three goals, generally curriculum-focused, program-focused, and engagement-focused (for details of goals, see Jim's slides)
  • Goal 1: International experiences for all students in gen ed and professional studies
    • How do we measure/keep track when we already have such a wide variety of opportunities/experiences? Good question, maybe not our concern here but important to think of going forward.
    • It can be very challenging but also very powerful to give students an understanding of cultural context in the discipline - one of the subgoals mentions understanding different problem solving strategies as an avenue to tackle.
    • We don't want to over-constrain how we get students these experiences, Writing across the curriculum has run into logistical challenges. On the other hand, we would like to somehow ensure that every student has some sort of experience.
  • Goal 2: Program development
    • Thinking about new international fields of professional practice
  • Goal 3: Engagement
    • Should this refer to "educating students", when that is the focus of the first goal? The idea is that this goal refers explicitly to what we are doing and will do abroad, with international students, as opposed to the general RIT population, and how those students can be served by our new (research-focused) centers.
