During initial concept generation, a morphological chart was developed to collect and organize potential solutions to each function the system requires. From these solutions we generated several combinations of concepts that will allow the system to function as required by the Customer Requirements. The designs represent three primary methodologies: maximize performance, minimize costs, and balance cost with performance.

The team utilized the functional decomposition to determine the functions for which to generate concepts. During a brainstorming session the team created 10 concepts for each function, the most reasonable and practical of which are listed in the trimmed down morphological chart below. Viable solution candidates were selected via a Pugh chart and first-order benchmarking.
