Project Summary

Project Information

The RIT AMPrint Center's work the Aerospace Industry is demanding a way to print continuous fibers on a 5-axis 3D printer. Continuous fiber parts contain continuous strands of fibers, surrounded by a thermoplastic matrix (see this video for more details). There are two continuous fiber 3D printing technologies on the market today, but they are limited to planar motion (XY), and limited in open-source capabilities. 5-axis 3D printing allows a part to be made in very unique geometries, as it allows much more degrees of freedom (see this video for more details). There is currently demand for a 3D printer extrusion head that is capable of extruding continuous fiber materials consistently in free-form planes.

RIT AMPrint is funding this Multidisciplinary Senior Design project to design, build, and test a working prototype for an extrusion head capable of printing under these conditions. The goal of this project is to create an open-source design that is placed in the Public Domain. Carbon fiber will be the the main fiber of interest, but other materials like kevlar and glass are also desired.
