To setup student email in Outlook, there are several steps you must go through.

Go to and click on Google Preferences.

Because Outlook cannot use RIT's authentication, you will need to set a Google Apps Password.  Enter one here and click Save Password.  We recommend you use a very strong password as you will only need it to configure Outlook one time.

Once saved, go to and click on RIT GMail.

Login using your RIT username (no or and password (not the password you just set).

Click the gear in the top right

Click Settings.

Click Forwarding and POP/IMAP.

Check Enable IMAP.

Click Save Changes.

Go to Outlook and setup a new Account.

Select Manual setup or additional server types and click Next.

Select POP or IMAP and click Next.

Enter your name as you like it to be display.

Enter your email address as

Set account type as IMAP.

Set Incoming Server as

Set Outgoing mail server (SMTP) as

Enter your username as

Enter your Google Apps password you set in the first steps of these instructions.

Click on More Settings (NOT NEXT).

Click on the Outgoing Server tab

Check My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication

Select Use same settings as my incoming mail server

Click on the Advanced tab

Select SSL from the drop down for IMAP and then enter the port number of 993.

Select TLS from the drop down for SMTP and then enter the port number of 587.

Click OK when done.

Now click Next back on the Add Account window.

Be aware, it will fail.  You have another step to do to get this to work, but you can't do it until after you completed these steps.

Leaving Outlook as is, open a web browser and go to and click on RIT Gmail. You will find an email that says you must approve less secure apps to access your Gmail account.  You will need to Allow Access for Gmail to work in Outlook.

Once you are done allowing access, go back to Outlook and try again.  It should work this time.
