Additional Filters allow a user to display a group of students (from the My Students tab) or alerts (from the Tracking tab) by selecting one or more search criteria. The criteria are all optional and listed below. Because this search combines criteria, it is recommended that you only select criteria that you are sure about. The results displayed must meet all of the criteria selected. 

IMPORTANT: When a filter is in place, a red check mark will be visible next to the Additional Filters header. To remove ALL filters click the blue (X) below the red checkmark.



  1. Access Starfish through: 
    1. myCourses by clicking the Starfish button or the hyperlink
    2. SIS by clicking the Starfish tile on the Teaching, Advising & Support page
  2. From the My Students tab or Tracking tab, click the Add Filters button
  3. The Additional Filters window will open 
  4. Select the criteria of the students or alerts you would like to display.  
    1. Tracking Items - By selecting criteria in this category you are able to select the type of alert you are looking for:

      1. Check the box next to Students with tracking Items (this is not necessary from the Tracking Tab filter, it is already selected for you)
      2. Status 
        1. Active = find tracking items (alerts and kudos) that are still active 
        2. Resolved = find tracking items (alerts and kudos) that are resolved (have been cleared)
        3. Both = find all tracking items (alerts and kudos) whether they are active or resolved
      3. Tracking Type 
        1. Flag = find tracking items that are Flags (alerts)
        2. Kudos = find tracking items that are Kudos (positive notifications)
        3. To-Do = find tracking items that are To-Dos (in success plan)
      4. Item Name
        1. In the drop-down box, check the box(es) for the type of tracking items you would like to be displayed.  This drop-down will include all tracking items that the user can raise/view based on their role. (Note: tracking items that have a "Z - Tracking Item Name" are old alerts no longer being used at RIT. These alerts remain searchable as some students may have been assigned them prior to the alert being disabled.)
      5. Created By
        1. Anyone - finds tracking items raised by anyone (access to view tracking items is based on role)
        2. Me - finds tracking items raised by the user
        3. Role - tracking items are raised by Instructors only, therefore the only option in this drop-down that will produce results will be "Instructor" 
      6. Select Course Context
        1. Typing in a course prefix will find all courses in that discipline, for example, MATH with display all tracking items with MATH in the course name
      7. This feature can be used for To-Do's only
      8. Creation Date - By selecting a Start and End date you are able to display tracking items that were created within a specific time frame
        1. Enter Start date
        2. Enter End date
           
    2. Cohorts & Relationships - By selecting criteria in this category you are able to select which students you are looking for:

      1. Select the Term for your search 
        1. Active = current term
        2. All = all terms for which you have data
        3. Ongoing = all terms for which you have data
      2. Select a Connection
        1. All My Students = find all students with whom you have a connection
        2. Role Specific = find all students to whom you have a connection for a specific role, for example, Instructor, Primary Academic Advisor, Advising Lead, Department Contact, Major Contact
        3. Course Specific = find all students in a specific course, for example, "Math.171.04.2135"
      3. Section(s) - check this box to search for a specific class section
      4. Organization(s) - check this box to search for a major
    3. Meetings - This section allows you to filter by whether you have had a meeting with a student or not, the Reason for the meeting, and the date the meeting occurred.

      1. Check the box by Students
      2. Select either "Who have had/scheduled meetings" or "Who have not had/scheduled meetings"
      3. Select an Appointment Type / Reason - This allows you to filter on a particular reason(s) for the meeting
      4. Select the Dates - This allows you to select the date range for the meetings 
    4. Success Plans - RIT only has one success plan
      1. Check the box by "students"
      2. In the "Plan Type" select "LOA Success Plan"
      3. Use the "And Success Plan is" check box to look at "complete" or "In Progress" plans
    5. Attributes - Only those with an advisor role (academic, faculty, support) will be able to use this filter due to their ability to view student attribute data

      1. Click the (plus) Add Attribute button
      2. From the Attribute dropdown, select an attribute you would like displayed
        1. From the Values list, select Specific Value and then enter the entire minor code in the text box in the following format: UCOS-ECON-MN
        2. If a student has more than one minor they will not show up when using the minor attribute filter
        3. Admit TermFrom the Values list, select Specific Value and then enter the RIT Term (i.e. 2231)
        4. Attempted CreditsFrom the Values list, select Specific Value, this will result in two fields appearing
          1. The first field is a drop-down where you can select greater than (>), less than (<), equal to (=) or not equal to (≠)
          2. In the second field type in the numerical value desired
        5. Campus - From the Values list, select Specific Value and then select one of the following:
          1. CROAT = RIT Croatia
          2. DOMRP = PUCMM (Dominican Republic)
          3. DUBAI = RIT Dubai
          4. KOSOV = RIT Kosovo
          5. MAIN = RIT Rochester
          6. ONLINE = Online only students
        6. Class Level - From the Values list, select Specific Value and then select one of the following:
          1. 01 - first year
          2. 02 - second year
          3. 03 - third year
          4. 04 - fourth year
          5. 05 - fifth year
          6. GR (graduate level or higher)
        7. Completed Credits - From the Values list, select Specific Value, this will result in two fields appearing
          1. The first field is a drop-down where you can select greater than (>), less than (<), equal to (=) or not equal to (≠)
          2. In the second field type in the numerical value desired
        8. Cumulative GPA - From the Values list, select Specific Value, this will result in two fields appearing
          1. The first field is a drop-down where you can select greater than (>), less than (<), equal to (=) or not equal to (≠)
          2. In the second field type in the numerical value desired
        9. Honors ProgramFrom the Values list, select Assigned to Student (or Not Assigned to Student if you want to find all students NOT in the Honors program)
        10. Major
          1. From the Values list, select Specific Value and then enter the major code in the text box, in the following format: UCOS-APPSTAT-BS

          2. If a student has more than one major they will not return in the results unless you use the “%” sign.  In the Specific Value box type the major code in the following format: UCOS-APPSTAT%

        11. Minor 
        12. NTID Counselor Advisor - From the Values list, select Specific Value and then enter the desired advisor's name. You can use a % if you are unsure of a preferred name in SIS (i.e. Sally Smith or % Smith)
        13. Non-Registered Status - From the Values list, select Specific Value and then enter the desired non-registered code
        14. Primary Academic Advisor - From the Values list, select Specific Value and then enter the desired advisor's name. You can use a % if you are unsure of a preferred name in SIS (i.e. Sally Smith or % Smith)
        15. Program Name - From the Values list, select Specific Value and then enter the undergraduate program code in the text box, in the following format: UCOE 
        16. Status - From the Values list, select Specific Value and then enter and then select one of the following:
          1. AC = Active
          2. CM = Certified (Will only show if they have a second active plan in SIS)
          3. DC = Discontinued (Will only show if they have a second active plan in SIS)
          4. DM = Dismissed (Will only show if they have a second active plan in SIS)
          5. LA = Leave of Absence
    6. You can add multiple attributes by clicking the (plus) Add Attribute button again
    7. When you have made all of your selections, click Submit (REMINDER: This is an "And" search, which means the results must meet ALL of the criteria selected.)
    8. Clear Filter - To remove all criteria, click the Clear All Filters button

      You can also clear a filter from your Student list or Tracking list.  Click on the "X" next to "Edit Filters" and your full list will be restored.

Filtering for students with multiple alerts

  1. From the My Students tab, click the Add Filters button
  2. The Additional Filters window will open 
  3. Select the criteria as follows to locate students with multiple alerts:  
    1. Tracking Items
      1. Check the box next to Students with tracking Items
      2. Next to Count type in a number to see students with this many or more flags (special note: administrative flags are included in the count)
      3. In Tracking Type select Flag
      4. In Creation Date use the calendar to select the term start and end dates
      5. Press Submit
