Name of Concept: Electric Car Charging Stations

Overview

In the coming years more of us will be driving hybrid or full electric cars. Is it possible and/or feasible to have car charging station or stations throughout campus? The next car I buy (probably within 2-4 years) will be at least part electric. If there was a place on campus that students and employees could charge their cars it would not only provide a useful service for RIT constituents but also motivate RIT's constituents to 'buy green'.

How this idea leverages current areas of RIT expertise

It leverages RIT's expertise on 4 levels.

  1. Innovative - who else is doing this? I don't know
  2. Sustainable - potential for solar and wind
  3. Student Experience - commuter students would love this!
  4. Research and Scholarship - students, professors and corporations could work together to develop this project.

  1. With 2012 there are about 3 fully electric cars** capable for achieving a range of 100 miles per full charge(proximity) , and with Federal tax cut on both the cars and their charging station* providing charging station in campus in the parking lots so students(we) can park our cars and have them charged while we are studying ; I believe it is the time to act to support this initiative as RIT is well known for it is green support.

*Charging Stations(220v) will charge the car fully in 8 hours

*Charging Stations(440v) will charge the car 80% in just 30 minutes.

That would be a great support for those who can't charge their cars with 110-120v cable since they doesn't live in the 1st floor or near a parking lot.
