Name of Concept: New Hockey Rink or Improvements to Season Ticket Holder Process

Overview of Idea:

As we know with the RIT mens hockey team going division 1 and hopefully the womens team in the near future the need for a new rink and or a new season ticket holder process is quickly coming upon us.  With the mens team selling out quite a number of games thus far and winning the Atlantic Hockey Association again this year some changes need to be done.

With many season ticket holders being students, faculty and staff the current process has many flaws with little reward for those that pay all their money up front for a seasons worth of games. With a reserved section being in the worst rink location, why would anyone want to sit there the entire season.

With a new updated rink and/or process we can continue to grow our D1 program and look at building a sustainable building that will also enhance the student experience.  Using our creative and innovative nature, a new rink could also be used for other events.

How this idea leverages current areas of RIT expertise:

With our current D1 team doing very well, we need to give the RIT community as well as the Rochester community the ability to continue to support our hockey teams.  With the womens team going D1 in the future, I think that there will be more support and larger crowds for this group as well.  Many of out alumni talk about the rink and how they support a new rink or expansion and I would hope they would also financially support it as well.

Main RIT on-campus champion(s) for this idea:

RIT Athletics, Development (for fundraising), season ticket holders for ideas

Additional on-campus champions willing to collaborate with this individual and take a lead role in driving the idea:

John Eldridge, Ron Goldberg

How you envision this idea advancing RITís national or global stature in an important or emerging field:

As a D1 team we can build the best facility and be known for that drawing more big name D1 teams to RIT, which will in turn draw bigger crowds.

  1. I support fund raising for a new rink, but there are other RIT athletics problems that should be addressed first.

The locker room situation for many other sports is worse than a typical high school and forget about team rooms and the coaches offices.

Before we build a new rink, the track/stadium/soccer/lacrosse and baseball/softball fields should have:

    a) Bathrooms

    b) lights

    c) simple concession stand

I also believe that we need to take a look at the way season tickets are handled.  There is no need for our season ticket holders who put up all the money before the season starts to have to wait in line an hour before doors open (2 hours before a game) to sit where they want.  As well, the waiting in line has become a joke since once the line starts to wrap around, those at the end just turn around and cut everyone off who have been there for an hour.  The reserved section was a good try, but are the worst seats in the house (in my opinion) and should be center ice.  I would be willing to pay more for a reserved seat and buy them as a season ticket holder if those seats were different.  This is just the beginning, but there are a lot of things that need to be looked at!

With the Tigers making it to the Frozen Four and funding for a new rink being discussed, this is the time to start looking at how we handle season tickets, etc.  We have a division I hockey program and need to treat all aspects of it as division I.  Next season we are going to have our biggest season ever with additional fans from the area who want to see what all the talk is about.  We also need to look at marketing to make sure that the word gets out to the external community.  This is our time to shine and our chance to make the best of the accomplishment the team has made.
