Turnitin is a third-party integration with myCourses, it is not a native tool of myCourses. It is supported by RIT's Academic Technology Support.

Similarity Report and Online Grading Tool in the Assignments Tool of myCourses

Turnitin must be configured on in the assignment settings prior to student submission.

The Turnitin Similarity Report can help instructors and students understand how similar students' assignment submissions are to other content. When students submit files to the assignment submission folder, the files are automatically checked against Turnitin's content database. The content database includes things like current and archived internet webpages, scholarly literature, periodicals, as well as student papers previously submitted to the system. The files will receive a Similarity Score and Similarity Report which details occurrences of similarity in the student's submission. Both students and instructors can view the Similarity Score and Similarity Report. The Similarity Report can help students and instructors identify improper citations and improvements needed in the student's writing skills.

The Turnitin Online Grading Tool allows instructors to add feedback comments to a student's Assignment submission vis Turnitin. Instructors can add automatic checking for grammar, usage, mechanics, style, and spelling errors by turning on the ETS e-rater in the Turnitin More Options settings before students submit their assignments.

Note that myCourses has an Annotation tool already built into the Assignment tool that can be used instead of Turnitin's tools. Review Turnitin Online Grading vs. Annotation Tool for a comparison.

Documentation on the Turnitin tools is available from the vendor:

Turnitin Originality Check for RIT Non-Course Work

RIT Instructors can use the Turnitin website to check similarity on RIT-related documents that are not tied to a specific course such as theses, dissertations, or papers for publication. Review Turnitin Similarity Report for RIT Non-Course Work for details.

The Turnitin documentation references a tool called PeerMark, which RIT does not have activated due to deficiencies in this tool. This page has been moved to the new CTL Knowledge Base.
