The Department of Education and Science (DES) was created as one of the first steps towards creating a new education system. It was followed by the creation of a legal and professional infrastructure to facilitate the fundamental reformation of the education system (5 + 4 + 3-4 in the general and professional education as well as the Bologna agreement for high education), and the establishment of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology in March 2002 .During the period of time it took to establish this system the private schools flourished.

In Kosovo primary and low secondary education for everyone aged 6 to 15 years is mandatory. By law, Kosovo guarantees equal equation to all communities. Primary and secondary education in Kosovo are free of charge and are financed by the budget of Kosovo. 

Education is available in both public and private institutions. There are many options when it comes to choosing an educational institution. Examples of both are provided below. 

Primary and Low Secondary Education

According to the law the primary education (1-5) and low secondary education is mandatory for everyone. The mandatory education begins when the child reaches 6 years of age (the minimal age of mandatory education. The low secondary education is the second phase of mandatory education which includes classes 6-9, generations 12 to 15 years of age, respectively. The education in primary schools in Kosovo is held in five languages: Albanian, Croatian, Turkish, Bosnian, and Serbian.

In Prishtina, in the academic year 2012/13, there were 59 schools out of which 57 provided lectures in Albanian language only and 2 schools that provided mixed language lectures.Total number of students as of 2013 was 32,140 out of which 15,476 were females.The average number of student per class in Prishtina in the academic year 2012/13 was 24.6.In the same academic year, primary and lower-secondary education was attended by 31,898-Albanians, 23-Bosnians, 64-Ashkali, and 152-Turkish.

 Public schools are educative institutions that get their funding from sources such as state, local municipalities and federal governments. Their services are those of general education to children from kindergarten to the 12th grade. Public schools can also be on higher education levels. 

Kosovo, in its public education system includes 43 pre-school institutions, 952 primary and lower secondary schools, 119 high schools, and 9 public higher education institutions. In addition to these institutions, there are 88 and 180 or 240 ECTS credits ends with a Bachelor's degree.

University of Prishtina "Hasan Prishtina"

Prishtina High School Pre K - 12

Accredited by Cognia (Prishtina High School) PHS has full accreditation from AdvancED, which is a non-profit international educational accreditation agency that represents the largest community of educational professionals in the world. PHS also has a permanent license from the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology in Kosova.

PHS is an American-style school that maintains a low teacher-student ratio to allow for individualized instruction and to enhance teacher-student relations. They recruit and hire their teachers primarily from the United States and 80% are English Mother Tongue. They provide students and parents online, real-time access to the student’s academic performance and daily cafeteria menu.

PHS has students from more than 15 different nationalities including the United States, England, India, Germany, Scotland, Ireland, Slovenia and more. The student body includes approximately 60% Kosovars and 40% other nationalities.

After school activities include an Athletics program and Drama club. Elementary, Middle and High School students all have the opportunity to join football/soccer, volleyball and basketball teams that compete in intramural and extramural games and in multi-school tournaments. Drama and Arts Club involves creating and staging theatrical plays, holding talent shows, conducting in-school art exhibitions, and organizing dance exhibitions.

High School graduation requires 20 hours per year of Community Service, including activities such as: Recycling drives, Peer Tutoring Programs, Donating children’s books and other school materials to public schools, Coaching elementary school or middle school sports teams, Bake sales for charity, Volunteering at the local dog shelter, Working as teacher’s aides, Volunteering at other non-profit organizations outside of PHS.

The British School of Kosova  

It offers private programs for levels 1-12 education, including international classes in the upper secondary and primary levels, in which the lessons are taught in English, with international teachers or teachers with international experience. The purpose of organizing this particular British curriculum is to meet the needs of our children to be prepared in science, culture and art at international levels.

There is a strict dress code with uniforms to be worn for all activities throughout the day. The classrooms are equipped with a smart board and a projector. The school provides transportation to excursions and activities with their modern safe and secure school buses. 

Extracurricular activities include the Foreign Language Club (English and German), the science and math club, the drama, painting, photography and handicraft club, the club of music, ballet and guitar, the karate club, taekwondo and basketball club, as well as the green club.

Finnish School

Finnish School in Kosovo is a private educational institute which offers education in four different levels. Pre School which includes day care and Grade 0 for children aged 3-6, Primary School for grades 1-6 as well as Lower and Upper Secondary School for grades 7-12. 

They are utilizing Finnish Education System and new innovative teaching methods which have been proved to be effective making Education System of Finland to be one of the top ranked in the world. Main learning language is English but also Albanian, Finnish, German and French languages are being used. 

Their goal is to give students all around capabilities required to work successfully in the modern society. From early age on they emphasize the importance of technology in their teaching and students start learning coding and robotics on the first grade. They focus on personalized teaching with every student which allows them to learn more effectively based on their own strengths. One of the cornerstone of the teaching method is that there is no strict line between different subjects and students are doing projects where they utilize knowledge from several subjects.  

Their campus have been designed to serve optimal learning outcomes for the students. In addition with normal classrooms, they have areas for students to relax and socialize with each others, different labs for science studies such as Computer Programming Lab, Robotics Lab and various spaces for arts, music and handcrafts.
