Introduction
A monument is a statue, building, or other structure erected to commemorate a famous or notable person or event.
As being a small country, Kosovo contains within it a lot of beautiful monuments and public spaces. First being known as the "Dardanian Kingdom" in the IV century, then experiencing a lot of wars, this territory emerged to a small state called "Kosovo". Although it has a small territory, its population could maintain and keep its national values. These values created an identity for use, which we kept ever-since we existed as a nation. Kosovo is known to have a very multicultural, rich and astonishing legacy since the Bronze Age, followed by Iliriyans until the Ottoman period of time. Most of the monuments were created by the locals, with an influence from the empires who were occupying Kosovo at that time. However, more than 500 monuments and building could not resist the time, most of them were burnt down or got destroyed. By reading this Wiki page, you will be informed more about the monuments and public spaces, their history, and interesting facts about them.

Monasteries
Gracanica Monastery
Gracanica Monastery, is one of the oldest monuments in Kosovo territory, dating back to the medieval era. It was assembled in the 14th Century and located in the village of Gracanica, which is adjacent to Lipjan, the ancient town of Ulpiana, as well as the former occupancy of bishops. It was funded by King Stefan Milutin in the year of 1321.
What is intriguing, is the fact that the Gracanica monastery was built in the ruins of the Theotokos church of the preceding century, and the latter which was also constructed on the ruins of a Christian three nave basilica of the 6th Century. It can be read in one of the charters engraved by King Milutin: "I saw the devastation and fall of the church of the Holy Theotokos of Gracanica, Bishopric of Lipljan, I had it built from the foundation stone, I had it inscribed and decorated from the inside and from the outside." Many important elements of the monastery were ravaged during the Turkish assaults of the late 14th Century, including the vestibule, the dome, in addition to a great variety of significant manuscripts. The vestibule, however, may have been restored in 1383 by one of the bishops of Gracanica, Bishop Simeon.

St. Peter's Basilica Church (Kisha e Shën Pjetrit)
This Roman Catholic church which is situated in Mitrovica, is an archaeological monument of the 13th century, however, it was completed on the year 1303. This old stone building was constructed by Saxon miners, hence, its alternative name being the Saxon church. Presently, there are only so many remnants of the church that could be observed today which have survived time. Nonetheless, the church still remains under the protection of both Kosovo and Serbia as one of the most antiquated monuments within the boarders of Kosovo.

Patriarchate of Pec (Patrikana e Pejës)
The Church of St Nicholas-Tutic’s Church is a Serbian Orthodox church with sublime architecture and piecemeal paintings of a standard 14th century aristocratic family church. As can be observed from the stone epigraph, the church was constructed and embellished by a regional landlord, Dragoslav Tutic (Nicholas as a monk), and his wife Bela in 1331-1332. The paintings and decorations were done by the same people who also decorated the first-phase frescoes of St Savior in Prizren. It was given as a gift (probably in the Middle Ages) to the Decani monastery. The church is modeled as a small cruciform building of the compact cross type, being attached together with 3 other churches.
Patriarchate domes with the Prokletije Mountains in the background
The masonry is mixed stone and brick and has been executed carefully and professionally. The walls correspond to the late Byzantine technique of alternating layers of square stones and decorative brick courses. The harmonious wall paintings, although incomplete (time having taken its toll), were executed by a very skilled master craftsman shortly after the erection of the building and illustrate a wealth of iconographic themes. The architectural structure is that of a single-aisled nave with a central dome, supported by corbels, over a cross-in-square ground plan and with a small narthex.

A lot of the tourist that visit Prishtina nowadays might not know about the history behind the Hotel Union, or might not know about the Hotel at all. The reason after this is that, in a way the Hotel does not exist anymore. Now why is that? While taking a walk in the center of Prishtina, exactly at the Skanderbeg square, you might notice different shops, restaurants and attractions. Among them there is a clothing shop called Benetton, which in the 1927 was firstly open as a Hotel, the Union Hotel. At that time, amongst old Albanian music, and Yugo cars, the Hotel was known for its architecture. Simple, yet very European.
After the War in Kosovo and the modern area having a start, the Hotel took another look, while no investor wanted to continue the business of it as offering commodity to people. With the mindset of protecting the historical monuments, the Hotel Union was renovated, and to be now known as a very historical monument in the center of Prishtina, while at the same time a great store to shop clothes at (Database of Cultural Heritage of Kosovo, n.d.).

Periods of Modernism - Newborn
What is Newborn?
The monument of Newborn is essentially one of the symbols of Kosovo's Independence. It was established on the 17th of February 2008, on the same day that Kosovo was announced as an Independent and Sovereign country. Newborn itself as a word finds greater meaning on the hearts of Kosovars, as it represents the liberty and freedom from former regime of Serbian troops and government.
Who's idea was it?
The designing of Newborn was created by a collaboration between Fisnik Ismaili , who is a Kosovar designer and Ogilvy Kosova, known as a creative agency. They were able to design a monument, a piece of modern art, that would be located at the center of the capital city of Kosovo, in Prishtina (“‘NEWBORN’- The emotional Monument of Kosovo,” 2019).

A monument of united artists!
Initially, Newborn's surface was yellow to begin with, where with the time being in 2008 a lot of people felt the need to participate in such monument by writing their names with markers. The yellow paint was overfilled with layers of different names, who all felt free and liberated as citizens.
As every other artist, Fisnik and his group, wanted to further push the idea of being a Newborn country and to use the monument as a form of speaking art. They managed to sketch different designs as start up ideas for the following years. Each year is represented with a new surface of the Newborn sign. From Flags, to clouds and spikes, Newborn is serving very well as a reminder of different areas of time that Kosovars have gone through. Nowadays, a lot of artists find themselves designing new ideas and layouts, therefore the monument is bringing artists together.
Additionally, the monument itself is known as an attraction for a lot of tourists who want to know more about Kosovo and its past. One thing that it is worth mentioning is that the monument was featured in one of Rita Ora's famous song, called Shine Ya Light.
