Instructors have several options available to them when deciding on how they would like to configure a workspace for their classes. The currently known use cases are:

  • One workspace per course section: The workspace contains only the members of the one course section. Multiple channels can be created for that one course section for different purposes (e.g. private channels for group work, public channels for announcements).

  • One workspace for all sections of a course taught by one instructor: The instructor has multiple sections of the same course within one Slack workspace. Channels can be a mix of public channels for all sections to collaborate together and private channels for individual sections to collaborate with members of their section.

  • One workspace containing several similar courses taught by multiple instructors: Multiple instructors have agreed that it would be beneficial for their students to meet in one workspace to discuss their similar course contents. Channels can be a mix of public channels for all courses to collaborate together and private channels for individual courses to collaborate with members of their course.

  • One instructor workspace for all courses taught by the instructor: The instructor has a persistent workspace where all students of all courses for that instructor are added. Each course has its own private channel (or channels) within the workspace. Students are added to the relevant channel(s).

The easiest way to manage your workspaces is to create the course workspace or instructor workspace course channel with the intention that it is used for just one semester. This will facilitate easier archiving of workspaces and channels to remove all students at the end of the semester. You can, however, have a course workspace that is used semester-after-semester, you will just be modifying members each time instead of archiving the workspace or channel as a whole.

You must follow the process below if you want to create an RIT Enterprise Grid workspace. Do not go to slack.com to create a workspace because this will create a free workspace. Do not click + then "Create a new workspace" from the workspace switcher on the Slack app because this will also create a free workspace. The only way to create an RIT Enterprise Grid workspace is to use the request process below.

Note that you can only request one workspace at a time, so if you need multiple workspaces created, repeat this process for each workspace you need.

Log into the RIT Slack Workspace Directory with your RIT account.

For the Workspace Name, type what you want the workspace to be called. Keep the following in mind.

What you type for the workspace name here will become both the initial display name for the workspace and will be used to create the unique URL for your workspace. The URL will be limited to 21 characters and must be unique. In addition, since all URLs will end with ".slack.com", all workspace URLs must start with "RIT" to make them unique from other colleges who may have similar course numbers.

To avoid having conflicts with workspace identifiers for current and future courses, RIT has created the following naming conventions:

Once the workspace is approved and created, you will receive a notification by email and Slackbot. You will be added to the workspace with Workspace Owner permissions. You can add the workspace to your Slack app (review Sign in to Slack for details).
