Default Channels
By default, all workspaces will have a #general and #random channel created, and both are public to the workspace. You can use these as you wish. You can also rename these two channels if you want to use them for a specific purpose. The #general channel does have some other specific attributes which are described in The #general channel documentation.
There is also an #announcements-rit multi-workspace channel that all workspaces will have read-only access to. This is a channel at the organization level where RIT will post important information to the RIT community. Everyone at RIT can read these, but only designated RIT personnel can post to this channel.
Creating New Channels
From here, create additional channels based on how you want to use your workspace. Review the Ideas for Using Slack in your Class for suggested channels for certain use cases.
Review the following instructions:
Make the Channel Name something descriptive and unique to that workspace. Channel names have a limit of 80 characters, but depending on how wide your sidebar is on the desktop app, only the first 12-23 characters display. The mobile view of channels is wider.
Use the Channel Description field to indicate the purpose of the channel and any expectations about posting to it and reading items posted to it.
- Manage channel posting permissions
Set additional default channels so that students will have certain channels listed by default and don't need to browse to add them. Note that you should add default channels before adding members to your workspace. Any default channels created after a member is added will not retroactively add that default for that member.
