Preview Image
Preview images (thumbnails) can help viewers identify which video is which. Preview images are automatically generated for most Panopto recordings, but if your video has a generic play button image or you want to change the preview image, follow these instructions: Change the preview image.
Download Options
The default for all videos is that only the creator (owner) of the video can download it. If you want students to be able to download the video as an MP4 then follow the instructions at Enable Podcast (MP4) Downloads.
The default download format is picture-in-picture. You can configure the settings so the download is a side-by-side or single stream format instead.
If a file is included as part of the video streams (e.g. you screen recorded a slidedeck), then you may need to additionally give viewers access to download the attachments. Some file attachments do not require this extra step and are available automatically for students to download.
Table of Contents
A table of contents provides an easy way for viewers to navigate through a video. There are multiple ways to add a table of contents depending on how you created the video and the content within the video:
A table of contents may automatically be generated from your slide titles and can be edited. Review Edit a Pre-existing Table of Contents Entry for details.
If a table of contents is not generated, you can Enable Smart Chapters, if available.
If Smart Chapters are not available, you can manually create a new table of contents. Review Add a Table of Contents to a Video in the Editor for details.
Panopto Discussion Feature
Panopto discussions are time stamped text comments about a video that are attached to the video player itself. Discussions are enabled on all videos by default. These comments are visible to anyone with permission to view the video.
Some ideas for using Panopto discussions:
Encourage students to ask questions about video content here instead of other communication channels. You and their fellow students can answer the questions right on the video.
Add your own comments in the Discussion to draw attention to key points or highlight other relevant resources.
Prompt students to comment with their thoughts about a topic covered in the video. Discussions are displayed in a threaded format and replies can be hidden from view for easier reading.
Collect peer feedback on student-created video assignments.
To disable the Panopto discussion feature, review the instructions in our FAQ about turning off Panopto discussions.
Discussion comments on a video remain regardless of semester or course affiliation. If you will use a video in multiple courses or in another semester and you want to start with a blank discussion, do one of the following:
...
Make a reference copy (not a regular copy) of the video and store the reference copy in the other course's Panopto folder to have separate discussion threads.
