Setting up the Assignment

...

Click Panopto in your course's navigation bar. This will open your course folder in the Panopto web portal.

...

Create a new sub-folder inside your course folder. Name the sub-folder the same assignment name you will use in myCourses.

  1. The sub-folder must be in your course folder, not your My Folder so that the Classlist in myCourses can properly synch to the permissions in the Panopto course folder.

...

Configure settings for the Panopto assignment folder, if needed. Other settings will be configured in Step 5 below (when you are in myCourses).

...

By default, videos submitted to this folder are visible only to the instructor and the student who created it. To allow students to see others' videos in the Panopto web portal, select the checkbox for Allow viewers to see each other's sessions.

...

In myCourses, create an Assignment submission area.

    • In the Instructions field, indicate the requirements for the assignment as well as the name of the Panopto assignment folder you created in Step 2. Students may have access to multiple Panopto assignment folders so it's important to reiterate the one to use for this assignment. You can also provide them with the Completing Video Assignments wiki page.

    • You may also want to share with students resources such as Best Practices for Creating Course Video and General Recording Tips depending on the nature of the assignment.

    • For ease of identifying videos in the Panopto web portal, encourage students to include their own name in the video title.

    • Use the start date, due date, and end date in the myCourses Assignment settings to share the relevant dates to the students' myCourses calendars.

    • Make sure to use the "Text Submission" submission type so that students can use the Insert Stuff button in the text submission field to record/upload and submit their video.

Viewing and Grading Student Submissions

Since you used the myCourses Assignment tool to collect submissions, you use the built-in myCourses Assignment grading workflows to view submissions, grade on rubrics, and write text feedback.

You can use the Panopto discussions feature (aka text comments) in the video player itself to leave time-stamped comments on the students' videos. Panopto discussions are public to all viewers so use this strategically if you allow students to view each other's videos.

You can also access the Panopto folder in the Panopto web portal and view all of the student's submissions in a "playlist". There are no scoring features in the Panopto web portal.

Closing Assignment Folders

The start and due date on the myCourses Assignment will control when the students have access to submit to the Assignment tool. However, students will still be able to see the Panopto assignment folder in their recording options and be able to submit to the Panopto folder from the Panopto web portal.

If you are okay with the videos being only visible to you, you can close the folder in the Panopto web portal to prevent students from making further submissions to the Panopto assignment folder. However, if you allowed students to view each other's videos and you want to continue that permission, you are not able to close the Panopto assignment folder. Closing the Panopto assignment folder removes all visibility from students. Instead, leave the folder open and only accept submissions embedded in the myCourses Assignment tool. This page has been moved to the new CTL Knowledge Base.
