Setting up the Panopto Folder and Discussion Area
This process uses a Panopto "assignment" folder to store student videos. Even though it's called "assignment' in the Panopto name, it does not affect the ability to use it in a discussion context in myCourses.
...
- The sub-folder must be in your course folder, not your My Folder so that the Classlist in myCourses can properly synch to the permissions in the Panopto course folder.

In myCourses, create a Discussion forum and topic.
The instructions and requirements for the discussion activity, including if you expect students to make myCourses discussion text replies, video replies using the same process the students used for their initial post, or will use the Panopto discussions feature for in-video text comments. You can also provide them with the Completing Video-based Discussions wiki page.
The name of the Panopto assignment folder you created in Step 3. Students may have access to multiple Panopto folders so it's important to reiterate the one to use for this discussion activity.
Reiterate to students that they must edit their automatic speech recognition (ASR) captioning on their videos so that their discussion contributions are accessible to other students. Due to the turnaround time needed for professional captioning, using the ASR captions or manually typing captions are the only suitable options available so that all students can properly engage in the discussion activity.
You may also want to share with students resources such as Best Practices for Creating Course Video and General Recording Tips depending on the nature of the discussion activity.
In the topic description field, indicate the following:
Use the availability start date/end date and visibility properties in the myCourses Discussion settings to share the relevant dates to the students' myCourses calendars.
Viewing and Grading Student Discussions
Since students embed their videos right in the threads and replies in the myCourses Discussion tool, you use the built-in myCourses Discussion tool to view video responses, and the built-in Discussion to grade on rubrics and write text feedback.
You and the other students can use the Panopto discussions feature (aka text comments) in the video player itself to leave time-stamped comments on the videos. Panopto discussions are public to all viewers so use this feature for comments you want the entire class to read.
Closing Video-Based Discussions
The availability start date/end date and visibility properties on the myCourses Discussion will control when the students have access to post threads and replies to the Discussions tool. However, students will still be able to see the Panopto assignment folder in their recording options and be able to submit to the Panopto folder from the Panopto web portal. Due to the way student permissions function, instructors will not have a way to close the Panopto assignment folder to remove this option for student recording while still allowing students to view the embedded videos in the myCourses Discussion tool. Instructors should only accept submissions embedded in the myCourses Discussion tool. This page has been moved to the new CTL Knowledge Base.
