Overview

myCourses offers two tools for viewing a course from the Student Perspective. While it is not 100%, the access provided across these two tools does offer an almost comprehensive overview.

...

  • Preview covers almost all of the locations in myCourses where an assessment is provided.
  • In Assignments and Quizzes it allows Instructors to make submissions, grades submission, and then view the feedback provided.
  • In Grades it allows the Instructor to see the Grades from any specific student's view.
  • Most previews offer options to bypass restrictions, such as being manually hidden or date restrictions.

View As

The View As tool offers a generic view of the course from the student perspective, or actually any role below the rank of the Instructor.

View As does not work in tools where there is an assessment, that is where the Preview tool is used.

Accessing

From almost any page on myCourses click on your name to the top-right, and then select View as Student.

Your profile icon will change to two arrows and beneath your name it will state "as Student."

Changing Role

If when accessing the View As tool your role is not View as Student, or you wish to see a different role, click Change link and select the desired Role from the listing.

Preview

Preview is offered in tools to let Instructors experience the course from the Student perspective. Generally when a tool relies on student work or an assessment, Preview will be required instead of View As.

Assignments

Assignments allows an Instructor to preview the entire experience from the student perspective. You can use Preview to see the full cycle of the Assignment experience. You can use Preview to see how the assignment is presented to students, make a submission, exit Preview and provide feedback on the submission as the Instructor, and then return to Preview and see the feedback from the student's perspective.

Entering Preview

...

You will now be in the Assignments listing with the Assignment Preview banner. You are experiencing the Assignments tool from the Student perspective aside from the banner, and that by default you are bypassing any restrictions on the assignments. Restrictions include Availability dates/times and any other Release Conditions you may have defined.

To test restrictions such as Availability, you can Uncheck the option to Bypass any restrictions on submitting to assignments. While this works readily for testing Availability, an Instructor may not be able to test all Release Conditions they may have defined due to their account not being able to meet a condition in that course.

To make a submission you may click on an assignment in the listing and submit the form. To allow this previewed submission to be kept for grading and feedback you must check the box stating: Allow this preview submission to be available in the folderbefore clicking Submit. If that box is not checked, the submission is not kept and cannot be recovered.

Exiting Preview

To exit Preview, click on the Exit Preview button found in the Assignment Preview banner at the top of the page.

Viewing Previewed Submissions

To view a submission that was made in preview using the Allow this preview submission to be available in the folder option, you must have exited Preview and returned to your Instructor access.

...

You can now interact with the submission and provide feedback as you would for a normal Student submission.

The only exception is that any grade will not go over to the Grades tool as your account and current role in the course does not contain any Grades.

After publishing feedback you can return to Preview and see the feedback from the Student perspective.

Grades

In Grades Preview allows you to preview a the grades of a specific student. There isn't a generic preview as your account doesn't have any actual grades in the course.

Entering Preview

...

That student's view of their Grades will open in a new window.

The view will be managed by the access or restriction settings affecting that specific student.

Exiting Preview

Close the preview window that opened.

Quizzes

Quizzes also allows an Instructor to preview the entire experience from the student perspective. You can Preview to see how the quiz is presented and take the quiz to make a submission, you can then exit Preview and provide feedback on the submission, then return to Preview and see the Submission View from the student's perspective.

Entering Preview

...

You will now be in the quiz preview. You are experiencing the quiz from the Student perspective except for the Exit Preview button and the Bypass Restrictions checkbox on the Quiz Details page.

To test restrictions such as Availability, you can Uncheck the option to Bypass restrictions. While this works readily for testing Availability, an Instructor may not be able to test all Release Conditions they may have defined due to their account not being able to meet a condition in that course.

To allow this previewed attempt to be kept for grading and feedback, on the Quiz Submission Confirmation screen displayed after you click Submit Quiz for the first time you must check the box stating: Allow this preview attempt to be graded in the Grade Quiz areabefore clicking Submit. If that box is not checked, the attempt is not kept and cannot be recovered.

Submission Views

Once the quiz is submitted you will see the currently active Submission View based on the Quiz settings.

When you click the Done button at the bottom of the page you are taken to the Quiz Submissions page where any attempt saved using the Allow this preview attempt to be graded in the Grade Quiz area option is displayed.

At the top of the table is a Submission View drop-down menu that allows you to select any of the configured submission views, then click on an Attempt in the list to see the attempt with the selected view.

Viewing Previewed Submissions

To view an attempt that was made in preview using the Allow this preview attempt to be graded in the Grade Quiz area option, you must have exited Preview and returned to your Instructor access.

...

You can now interact with the attempt and provide feedback as you would for a normal Student submission.

The only exception is that any grade will not go over to the Grades tool as your account and current role in the course does not have any Grades there.

After publishing feedback you can return to Preview and see the Submission Views from the Student perspective. As a reminder, you must Preview the quiz and submit an attempt to get to the Quiz Submissions page described above under Submission Views.

Unsupported Tools and Exceptions

The following tools do not work with View As and do not offer a Preview, or have exceptions. There is no way for an Instructor to see them from the Student perspective.

These include, but are not limited to:

...

  • Download under View As uses the permissions of your normal role, so you will be able to download items that are hidden or restricted by date that would not be available to a student.
