Using a digital rubric to grade an activity that occurred in person helps instructors evaluate more efficiently, allows scores to be tallied automatically, and grades pushed to the gradebook automatically.

These instructions assume the instructor has already built the rubric in the rubric tool.

myCourses Assignment Tool Option

This option allows instructors to provide assignment instructions and indicate start/due/end dates in the same place that the grading/feedback will happen. It also allows the instructor to link the activity in the Content tool. Dates are displayed in the Calendar tool along with other activities. Even though the activity task happens in person, the instructor creates a myCourses Assignment with an In-Person type. The rubric gets attached to the Assignment for grading/leaving feedback. The grade item gets attached to the Assignment for passing the total score to the Gradebook. Students will be able to view feedback from the Assignment tool or the Grades tool.

  • When setting up the Assignment:
    • On the left panel, indicate the number of points you are grading out of, then choose In Gradebook and Create or Link Grade.
    • Under Submission and Completion, for the Submission Type, choose Observed in person. For the Marked as Completed setting, choose either of the automatic options.
    • Under Evaluation & Feedback, click Add Rubric to attach the rubric.
    • Configure other settings as you wish.
  • When evaluating:
    • Use the grading workflow just like if a student submitted an artifact. The rubric will be on the right side panel.

myCourses Grades Tool Option

This option is quick to set up but provides limited detail to students about the nature of the activity. Those details would need to be provided in some other way. The rubric gets attached to the Grade item itself for grading/leaving feedback. Students will be able to view feedback from the Grades tool only.
