h3. Name of Concept: Access
h3. Overview of Idea:
More NTID access to classes. Right now cross registered ntid students are restricted to only taking the courses which have NTID support in parenthesis next to the course name. So even if that class doesn't match their schedule or they just don't like that teacher they are forced into that class anyways or put in a class where they are not guaranteed the support they need. That is oppression, under the ADA they have the right to full access in the classroom and it should be whatever classroom they want to be in. I think RIT needs to hire more staff interpreters, I know DAS is fully staffed now, but we need interpreters just sitting around doing nothing so that if an assignment comes up or if a Deaf student wants to take an RIT class that is not labeled as NTID, the institute will be able to accommodate for that. Or if the school is not willing to hire more interpreters find a way to open those non supported classes to 4th year interpreting practicum students, they have to complete a number of interpreting hours in order to complete the course, and they would be volunteer.
h3. How this idea leverages current areas of RIT expertise:
This idea would support the idea of diversity on campus. RIT likes to brag that we have deaf students working along side of hearing students in the classroom but really its that we have some classrooms that work with deaf students as well. Almost as if those are the classes that will tolerate having NTID students in the room. Its oppressive and NTID students are not happy here. By implementing this idea, it will really show that NTID and RIT are one, that they are united and really working together.
