h3. Name of Concept: Intercollegiate Student Project Liaison
h3. Overview of idea:
Students working on senior projects or any project/research are often unfamiliar with the wealth of resources available both on and off campus. For example a student team from KGCOE may have a senior project working with a hospital. Their goal is to improve the printing quality of biomedical microscopic slides. These students may not know RIT has experts in the field of biomedical photography or experts in histology. These experts may be able to provide invaluable information to the students as they strive toward their project goal.
An Intercollegiate Student Project Liaison would develop a resource guide/website to match student needs with faculty, staff and resources across the University and within the greater community. The liaison would meet and speak with faculty and staff to gather information to create and update the guide/website. The liaison would meet with student teams to offer resource suggestions, to recommend specific faculty and/or staff that may offer information and suport and to recommend community contacts and resources.
The Intercollegiet Student Project Liaison would bridge the resource gap between colleges at RIT and foster collaboration between the colleges.
h3. How this idea leverages current areas of RIT expertise:
Students engage in a wide range of real world projects. Because these projects are "real world" they are not limited to one discipline. RIT, with its eight diverse colleges holds a wide range of expertise in a multitude of areas.
The current climate at RIT offers limited opportunty for the right brained and left brained colleges to collide. A Intercollegiate Student Project Liaison can connect students with experts throughout RIT. Rather than reinventing the wheel, students can push their innovation further with intercollegiate support. They can be inspired, motivated and encouraged with support from many areas outside their own majors.
h3. Main RIT on-campus champion(s) for this idea:
Barbara Fagenbaum
h3. Potential off-campus individual, organization, company or government entity advocate(s):
Grant sources. Corporate support.
h3. Are you aware of another university that is working on a similar idea?
No.
h3. How you envision this idea advancing RITís national or global stature in an important or emerging field:
An Intercollegiate Student Project Liaison would be another unique service RIT offers its students.
h3. Why you believe RIT has a unique opportunity or an ability to differentiate itself through this idea:
True innovation and creativity happens in an environment filled with resources, collaboration and support. Ideas and inspiration don't happen in a vacuum; they don't happen in isolation; they don't happen alone in a basement lab. A student centered University, an Innovation Univeristy reaches out to its students with resources, collabortive opportunties and support.
RIT has a unique mix of colleges, therefore unique opportunities for student collaboration and innovation across disciplines. The wealth of expertise and resources at a University like RIT is too great for a small group of students to even know where to begin to tap in to. The Intercollegiate Student Project Liaison provides that link, that beginning step for students to connect with experts outside their own college.
A liaison who reaches out to individual students, who supports their work, who connects them to others across the University enhances their success and connectedness to RIT. This helps RIT stand above others.
