h3. Name of concept: Student Garage


h3. Overview of  idea:

Create a space for students to learn and practice basic automotive skills. I believe that it is very valuable for people to posses basic maintenance/repair skills. There are a number of students who end up working on their vehicles in the parking lots at RIT, having a proper work environment would be more environmentally friendly and generally safer overall.

h3. How   this idea leverages current areas of RIT expertise:

There are many "Gear Heads" or "Petrol Heads" on campus who would thoroughly enjoy having a place to work. Many of whom are in the mechanical engineering field and may wish to have an appropriate space to expand on their ideas.

h3. Identify   the main RIT on-campus champion(s) for this idea:

All car owners on campus would be able to take advantage of the shop. The shop could be primarily managed by the RIT Offroad Enthusiasts or other car based clubs on campus

h3. Identify   additional on-campus champions willing to collaborate with this   individual and take a lead role in driving the idea:

h3. Are   you aware of another university that is working on a similar idea?

I'm sure that there are other universities that have such accommodations; however, any specific names do not come to mind currently. RIT is striving to be one of the most renowned environmentally friendly universities. Automobiles inherently create pollution, but with proper maintenance the amount is reduced.
