h3. Name of Concept: Network Lab Expansion
h3. Overview
I think that RIT should drastically expand the NSSA network labs to include much more space, more hardware, and more adaptable areas. RIT should support students working on labs for not only classes, but practice for real-world scenarios like CCNA certifications. This can be done by providing secured labs with 24 hour or near 24 hour student access (major-specific student access). This would promote RIT's goal to become an excellent learning experience, as well as encourage learning and practicing for co-ops and ultimately post-graduation work.
h3. How this idea leverages current areas of RIT expertise
This would expand on the Golisano Networking and IT program and also allow RIT to provide a more substantial training area for local high-tech industries to send their employees.
h3. Main RIT on-campus champion(s) for this idea
Although I have not spoken with her, I believe that the NSSA department chair, Professor Silvia Perez-Hardy would support this mission.
h3. Is there potential off-campus advocacy and support for the idea?
Yes, Frontier Communications, Paychex, Paetec, Cisco
h3. Why you believe RIT has a unique opportunity or an ability to differentiate itself through this idea
Networking programs around the country are few and far between. The RIT networking program is a one of a kind program due to the structure. This will not hold true forever. Expanding the network labs and providing a true-to-life environment for students to work in would keep RIT on the top while providing students with opportunities unheard of in academics.
