Title: Innovative Education for Everyone

Overview

While many universities have pioneered open courseware initiatives, moving large amounts of course material, video, and other materials onto public websites, their focus has traditionally been on the classic disciplines: math, physics, biology, etc.  Given RIT's set of degree program, which feature innovative programs that have often been defined with real-world, application-driven connections, we could be an instant online leader for many fields including Imaging Science, Microelectronic engineering, or subdisciplines like Numerical Relativity.  These materials could benefit both our students and those elsewhere greatly if done well.

How this idea leverages current areas of RIT expertise

WE could leverage the skill areas of the various research groups on campus, along with the Institute's historic strength in multi-media distribution.  We could also play on our historic connections to industrial partners to help steer the vision and provide real-world examples of the educational material being presented.

Are you aware of another university that is working on a similar idea?

MIT and Caltech certainly have led the way with these projects, among others.
