Name of Concept: Office of Industry Partnerships

Overview

Create a central office where industries can go to connect and partner with RIT on student projects, training, testing, consulting, and project development.  RIT's foundation was built on its partnerships with industry and as RIT has expanded, there has been no focus or celebration of these partnerships.  Industry is often unaware of the vast spectrum of opportunities to work with us.  Additionally, faculty should be recognized for their contributions in developing these partnerships which often lead to jobs for our students, equipment donations, monetary gifts, participation in the development of cutting edge academic programs, and participation on advisory boards.  A decline in these partnerships would drastically effect the future of RIT.

How this idea leverages current areas of RIT expertise

RIT has a vast pool of expertise across campus, but how does industry find out about this?  Do they know that many departments require senior or MS projects which directly engage industry?  Do they know that customized training can be developed and delivered to their employees?  We have an untapped resource simply because all of the opportunities are unknown and are not marketed.

Main RIT on-campus champion(s) for this idea

I would suggest that a Vice President for Industry Partnerships position be created to bring weight and visibility equal in its importance to the VP for Sponsored Research and the VP for Government Affairs.

How you envision this idea advancing RIT's national or global stature in an important or emerging field

Currently, RIT's engagement with industry is scattered throughout campus.  With a central office, there would be the opportunity for a more focused marketing and tracking approach.

Why you believe RIT has a unique opportunity or an ability to differentiate itself through this idea

Most universities are focused on government sponsored research - you hear very little about industry partnerships.  These partnerships offer many opportunities for RIT, our faculty, and our students.
