Depending on your role in a course, the Insights Portal can be accessed from the main myCourses homepage or a single course's navigation bar. The Insights Portal aggregates data that is already being tracked in myCourses such as student time on task, course login patterns, activity submission information, and grades. Data is shared as interactive visualizations with drill down options and filters. Regardless of the way you access the Insights Portal, it will show data for all courses together, but you can filter each visualization by course. Data can also be exported.

The Insights Portal includes two dashboards available to instructors, support staff, and teaching assistant roles in myCourses.

  • Assessment Quality: Includes quiz and question statistics such as reliability, average grade, and correlations. This information can help instructors understand the quality of their assessments.

  • Engagement: Includes information on time since last course access, status of assignments in relation to due dates, time in content, and time in content in relation to grades. This information can help instructors understand how students are interacting with course materials. It can also help instructors identify disengaged and at-risk students so the instructor can reach out to individual students, or patterns of interaction that helped students be successful to share general advice to the entire class.

Students do not have access to this tool.

Instructor Training

  1. If you are interested in accessing the Insights Portal from within a course, customize the navigation bar to add the Insights Portal tool to your course. You can copy your existing navigation bar to keep your currently-used items and just add the new tools you want.
    • Only instructors, Support Staff, and Teaching Assistants will see this navigation item from within a course once it is added. Students will not see Insights Portal in their navigation bar nor will they have access to this tool.
    • Instructor roles can always access the Insights Portal from the main myCourses homepage without having to edit the navigation bar.  Support Staff, Teaching Assistants, and students do not see the Insights Portal from the main myCourses homepage.

  2. Refer to the following training documents for how to use the two Insights Portal dashboards.
