Determine if you will be using a video that someone else has created or if you need to create the video yourself. Expand the appropriate section below to learn more. If you have questions about this process or want to discuss the video strategy for your course, please request a 1:1 consultation with an Instructional Technologist or Multimedia Developer.

Existing/Found Media

  1. Gather media that others have created. Ensure your media meets RIT C03.2 Copyright Policy before use.

    • YouTube and other web video

    • Textbook publisher video

    • Audio-only recordings/podcasts

    • RIT library owned media or DVDs. For details, review RIT Libraries Media for Class Use.

  2. Review your existing/found media to determine if it is able to be streamed online (played back online instead of downloaded). The method you will use to insert the video into myCourses will depend on the streaming method:

    • Is your media already hosted on a public YouTube channel, website, or other public web streaming service? If yes, you can add the link to your course's content.

    • Is your media part of a textbook pack? If yes, review information about third-party integrations in myCourses for linking the publisher to your course's content.

    • Is your media available through one of the RIT Library streaming services? If yes, follow the instructions on the RIT Libraries Media for Class Use or contact your college librarian for instructions on embedding the media in your course's content.

    • Is your media already hosted on a different instructor's Panopto account? If yes, refer to Can I share videos with another instructor FAQ for details on using someone else's Panopto video in your course. You will need to coordinate with the other instructor.

    • If you have a video file on your computer such as an MP4, WMV, or MOV file, upload it to Panopto for streaming in your course.

  3. Review your existing/found media to ensure that it has captions and that the captions are accurate (be aware that YouTube auto-generated captions are not sufficient). 

    • If it does not have captions, request professional captioning via the Captioning Request Form. You will need to provide links to the media that you need captioned. Captioning turnaround time is about one week so please plan accordingly.


Self-Created Video

  1. Create a list of videos that you intend to self-create. Some examples are:

    • Course Intro / Welcome Messages

    • Weekly Intros / Summaries

    • Micro Lectures / Presentations

    • Whiteboard Problems / Annotated Documents

    • Labs / Demos / Interviews

  2. Review Best Practices for Course Video.

  3. Decide on the production style(s) that fit your content.

    • Talking Head

    • Voice Over Slides

    • Digital Whiteboard

    • Demo/Lab

    • Interview

  4. Script/outline/storyboard your videos.

    • Find and select your visuals

    • Align script with visuals into a storyboard

    • Rehearse script and determine timing

  5. Record and edit your videos using either Camtasia or Panopto. Camtasia videos will then need to be uploaded to Panopto for streaming.

  6. Caption your videos either by editing machine-generated captions or by requesting professional captioning from within Panopto.

    • Note: Professional captioning turnaround time is about one week so please plan accordingly.

  7. Insert the Panopto video into your myCourses course.
