Creating Your Video-based Discussion Post

  1. In the myCourses Discussion, start a new thread or create a reply as you normally would for a text-based discussion.

  2. In the text editor, click the Insert Stuff button
    shows step 2

  3. Click Panopto.
    shows step 3

  4. In the folder dropdown, select the folder that your instructor told you to save to. You will need to expand down the RIT myCourses folder and will likely need to expand down multiple levels to get to the correct folder. It will always be one of the folders with "[assignments]" in the name.

  5. Use one of the following recording methods. Review General Recording Tips for advice on making good recordings.

    • Use the built-in camera on your mobile device. Click the Upload tab in the Panopto integration to record a new video on your device.

    • Use the Panopto Capture recorder in the browser or on certain mobile devices (not yet supported for Apple mobile devices). Click the Record tab in the Panopto integration to record using this tool and your webcam/microphone. After recording and the Panopto window informs you that it is okay to close the tab, return to the myCourses tab.

  6. Click the green Insert button in the Panopto frame then the blue Insert button at the bottom of the popup.
    shows step 5

  7. Your video will appear embedded in the text editor of the discussion post. Once you are ready, click Post to add your discussion post to the thread.

  8. Immediately open the video in the Panopto web portal to add captions. Students who voice can generate automatic speech recognition (ASR) captioning on their videos and edit the ASR captions. Students who sign can manually type captions on Panopto Videos. If you delay in creating these captions, other students may not be able to fully participate in the activity.

Replying to Other Students in a Video-based Discussion

The method you use will depend on the discussion activity instructions that your instructor gave you:

  • Use the myCourses Discussion tool as you normally would to write text replies or reply with a new video using the instructions above.

  • You and the other students can use the Panopto discussions feature in the video player itself to leave time-stamped comments on the videos. Panopto discussions are public to all viewers so use this feature for comments you want the entire class to read.
