What if I was enrolled or assigned today?
Enrollments and assignments will not appear immediately on myCourses, they will be received the next day.
myCourses receives an information feed once each morning starting at 3:00am and finishing around 5:00am Eastern.
For example, if an enrollment or assignment is made in the Registrar's records on Monday afternoon, it will not show up on myCourses until Tuesday morning after myCourses receives the next daily feed.
Find the current semester's courses
In the My Courses listing on the Homepage of myCourses, click the folder tab for the Semester.
The semesters are arranged in descending order. The most recent semester you have classes in will be to the left following the All tab.
We have an article explaining RIT Semester Codes, to help understand what these codes represent. You will not have a Semester tab or All tab if your account only has courses in one Semester available to you. If you are new to RIT and only have courses assigned to you under a single semester that semester will be displayed right away for you.
The semester is indicate on the course block, following the course title.
You will see the All tab and Semester tabs once you get courses assigned to you that are in different semesters or categories.
Search for courses
You can search for courses by in two ways.
When you are searching, you can search on any combination of:
- Part of the title
- Part of the course number
- The semester code
If I was looking for BIOL.101.01 - Intro to Biology (BIOL10101.2191), I could search on 101 2191 for example. This would show me search results for all "101" course I have access to in the Fall 2191 semester.
Search method 1
The first place you can search is available throughout most pages on myCourses, the course selector menu "waffle" icon found at the top of the page.
Clicking this icon will show a menu to quickly select pinned and recently access courses. At the top of the menu is a search field where you can search for courses.
Search method 2
This is only available on the home page.
Below the course listing click the View all Courses link.
The page you are taken to has a search field where you can search for courses.
Pin courses to the top of the listing
Pinned courses appear at the top of the listings they are on. They will be at the top of the All tab, the top of tab of the semester they are offered, and at the top of the listing under the course selector menu "waffle" icon.
- Point your mouse at the course you wish to pin. A button labeled … appears at the top-right of the course icon.
- Click the … button and select Pin from the menu.
- The course is now listed under the Pinned heading and will always be shown at the top of the list.
- Pinned courses can also be easily accessed through the Course Selector waffle icon found at the top of most pages throughout myCourses.
Pinned courses are always at the top of the listing and highlighted with a blue background.
What can I do if I've tried all of this and the course isn't there?
Students Missing Courses
Please review the following information before contacting support regarding a missing course.
- Students do not have access to courses until two weeks before the first day of classes.
- If it has been one day since your enrollment and the course is not on myCourses, first confirm you can see the course on your record in the Student Information System.
- If you can confirm it is on SIS then contact Academic Technology Support to get it added to myCourses.
- If the course is not in SIS then you will need to contact your academic adviser or the Registrar's Office for assistance with your enrollment.
- Courses may merged with other sections or courses by the Instructor. The course may not be named as you expect due to the merging of course numbers or differing course titles, so double check all of your courses for that semester.
- Instructors have the ability to make a course inactive which will remove it from student view. You may be enrolled but the instructor may be hiding a course while work is being done.
Faculty Missing Courses
Please review the following information before contacting support regarding a missing course.
- Faculty will receive their courses for the upcoming term eight weeks before the start of that term.
- Faculty missing a class should first confirm they have been assigned to the course properly in the Registrar's records. You may confirm this through SIS or with the scheduling officer for your academic department. If the assignment is confirmed, then contact Academic Technology Support for assistance.
- Please remember that any new assignments or changes in the Registrar's records will not be reflected on myCourses until the next morning as the information feed from the Registrar is sent to myCourses once each morning ~5:00am Eastern.
- If you are an additional instructor or teaching assistant on a course, you will only have access to the course automatically if you are also listed in the Registrar's records.
If you require immediate access to a course, a confirmation email may be sent by the scheduling officer, department head, or dean who represents the academic department offering the course to Academic Technology Support. This must include the full course number including section and the academic term of the courses(s).
These measures are due to the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
Course Updates Indicators
The Course Updates indicators may not be 100% accurate.
You may have indicators for work you cannot find. When a student make an appropriate action, such as making a Discussion post or taking a quiz, the system updates the indicators. The indicators are not updated if work is removed before the instructor reviews it. For example the instructor removes a Discussion forum before reading all new messages in it. A student drops or withdraws from a course and their work, such as a quiz attempt or assignment submission, is archived before the instructor reviews it. The vendor is aware of this concern but has not implemented a fix at this time.
On the main myCourses homepage, the course tile has update counter icons for how many ungraded assignments, unread discussions, and ungraded quiz attempts you have.
On the course homepage, the Updates widget includes the same information. On the default course homepage, the Updates widget is found at the top of the right-hand column.
Visibility of this information in both locations is specific to your role:
Unread Discussion Posts (Instructors & Students)
Ungraded Quiz Attempts (Instructors Only)
Unread Assignment Submissions (Instructors Only)
Access to Courses After Semester Ends
Students and instructors retain access to courses after the semester is over. The course will be automatically marked as "CLOSED" on the course tile, but both students and faculty retain the same access and functionality in a closed course.
There are two items that can affect course access:
- If an instructor has put an end date on an activity or content item, it will remove access for the student to just this item on the item's end date and time.
- If an instructor manually marks their course as "Inactive", students will loose all access to the course.
Students can retain access to myCourses after graduation as long as they keep their alumni account active. For details about the alumni account, review Transitioning from Student to Alumni Computer Accounts
