Although Respondus allows an instructor to publish the exam directly to a CMS such as myCourses for an online course, it also allows them to generate documents to edit in a text editor or word processor, or print them out directly for distribution within a classroom environment.

You can generate Exams, take advantage of randomization to create multiple versions, create exams with answer keys, or generate a stand alone answer key. All of these can be printed right from Respondus, or you can save them as text files (TXT), Microsoft Word documents (DOC, DOCX), or Rich Text Files which open in most other word processors (RTF).

Respondus can generate up to 10 random variations of an exam, which is helpful for in-person classes when printed exams are needed.

How to Print an Exam

  1. After opening your file, click the Preview and Publish tab.
  2. Click Print Options on the left-hand menu.
  3. Select an option: Exam or Exam with Answer Key or Answer Key only.
  4. Optionally, click the settings button to the right to further adjust the settings, including text formatting, showing or hiding feedback, page numbering, and more.
  5. To add headers, click the Edit Headers button. A new window will appear. After adjusting the header settings (if any), click OK to confirm.
  6. To print multiple variations of the exam (with randomized question order in each), change the pull-down list to the desired number of exam variations. You may also choose to Randomize question order and Randomize answer choices within each question.

Respondus allows up to 10 variations of the exam to be generated (labeled Random variation A though J). You have the ability to "randomize all" questions in the exam or to have the questions randomized according to question type (i.e., all the multiple choice questions are randomized within a group, all the essay questions are randomized within a second group, and so forth). If you don’t want multiple exam variations, simply retain the "Original Order" option from the pull-down list.

  7. Click the Print Preview button to display the exam output in a new window. This window will also allow you to Copy to Clipboard, if desired.
  8. When finished, either Save to File or Send to Printer.
