Focus/identity question: What disciplinary and interdisciplinary academic and research areas (current and/or emerging) can RIT be among the best in the world?

    An initial list might include:

    1)      Product and systems design and engineering

    2)      Computing and information sciences (including interactive games and media)

    3)      Interdisciplinary liberal arts and sciences

    4)      Digital imaging, design and communication  (including imaging science & remote sensing)

    5)      Entrepreneurship and digital business

    6)      Health and wellness science and technology

    7)      Bio-x

    8)      Sustainability

    9)     Astrophysics/astronomy

    10)   Deafness & accessibility

    What others are there?

  2. I think a good summary for how RIT specifically can be the best in the world is "experiential learning". Although programs help set us apart from other universities, many of the above are highly regarded at other schools. What makes RIT unique is:

    • Co-ops
    • Applied Research
    • Labs
    • Hands-on Education

I'm sure there are more examples but I think that focus really sets up apart. Experiential education is unique and something that RIT already strives at.

    Thoughts?

We would like to propose the following revised vision and mission statements to the larger SP steering committee:

    Vision

RIT will be the model for the modern university: An intersection of disciplines that advances globally relevant, pragmatic, socially responsible scholarship and learning.

    Mission

A community of problem-seekers, RIT prepares students for future workforce demands and global challenges in an environment that values academic rigor, experiential learning, interdisciplinary collaboration, innovation, and creativity.

[Alternate: A community of problem-seekers, RIT responds to and anticipates workforce demands and global challenges in an environment that values academic rigor, experiential learning, interdisciplinary collaboration, innovation, and creativity.]

[Alternate 2: A community of problem-seekers, RIT prepares students for future workforce demands and responds to global challenges in an environment that values academic rigor, experiential learning, interdisciplinary collaboration, innovation, and creativity.]

The following dimensions/elements would define organizational agility:

    1. Effective, flexible resource utilization - financial, human, space - based on strategic demands and opportunities
    2. Enabled and enhanced by technology
    3. Effective, open 2-way communication
    4. Prudently risk taking

The following tactics would support the definitional elements of organizational agility:

    1. On-demand registration and scheduling system
    2. Space master plan
    3. On-going program and service assessment and review
    4. Prudent risk management and compliance
    5. A budget allocation and costing model that is supportive to strategic goals and objectives
