h3. Name of Concept: CM Masters Degree
h3. Overview of Idea:
I believe that RIT, at the very least, develop a Master's degree program in Construction Management. There are no local schools that offer any degree in construction management so I believe that developing a master's degree in construction management will help RIT develop an area in which there is a need where there is no option currently available. Think of the number of construction companies that would come to hire graduates that not only have a degree in construction management, but a degree strengthened by RIT's rigorous and innovative standards.
h3. How this idea leverages current areas of RIT expertise:
This program will provide the graduate of RIT's Civil Engineering Technology (CET) or any other individual who has obtained a bachelor's degree in similar program a chance to further their education in the construction field.
h3. Main RIT on-campus champion(s) for this idea:
Professor John Morelli, CET/EMS department head
h3. Additional on-campus champions willing to collaborate with this individual and take a lead role in driving the idea:
Scott Wolcott, G. Todd Dunn
h3. How you envision this idea advancing RIT's national or global stature in an important or emerging field:
There are no local schools that offer any degree in construction management so I believe that developing a master's degree in construction management will help RIT develop an area in which there is a need where there is no option currently available. Construction management is a career that is expected to grow at a rate of 14% over the next five years. Think of the number of construction companies that would come to hire graduates that not only have a degree in construction management, but a degree strengthened by RIT's rigorous and innovative standards.
h3. Why you believe RIT has a unique opportunity or an ability to differentiate itself through this idea:
RIT's unique blend of artistic skills, performance talent and technology has the potential of placing our students at the pinnacle of the commercial video, film and television industry. Our embrace of Deaf culture and Sign Language gives us an edge on visual performance work that very few colleges have. Conservatory programs have performance training (and they all offer yearly New York/LA showcases for their students)but they do not have the blend with technology. Many film schools also offer NYC showcases for student work but they don't have the live poetry, dance and performance talents we do.
